Greg Maddux, LA Dodgers -122 vs. Jake Peavy, San Diego Padres

9/26/2008 12:25:08 AM by ChristopherQuinn

The Dodgers can make it official Thursday night as a win would give them the NL West lock, stock and barrel.  Lay it on Los Angeles at home against the San Diego Padres.

Bring out the brooms tonight as the Dodgers look to capitalize on home field advantage yet again and sweep the Friars in game three tonight.

Tonight’s game will be played at Dodger Stadium at 10:10 ET. With the Dodgers being a great home team and the Padres being a less than mediocre road team, tonight’s game should be an easy win for the Blue Crew. The only road block in this win is Pads' star pitcher Jake Peavy who has a season ERA of 2.77. However, Peavy has continued to struggle on the road with an on the road ERA of 4.20 and a WHIP of almost 1.50. He is only 4-6 on the road and is 0-2 in his last three outings, one of those loses coming from the dismal San Francisco Giants.

With home field advantage, veteran righthander Greg Maddux and the Dodgers know how to perform. When Maddux gets the rock tonight for Los Angeles with a home ERA of 3.17 and a WHIP of 1.024, it almost doesn’t matter who San Diego put on the hill. The Dodgers have outscored the Padres the last two nights by an astonishing 22-5. The Padres are a struggling team and their struggle turns into crippled when they hit the road. They are 27-52 in road games this season, having lost 15 of their last 20 games on the road. They are 1-6 in their last seven games against the dodgers and have already lost the first two games of this three-game series.

On the flip side of the coin the Dodgers are 18-5 in their last 23 games, 10-2 in their last 12 games at home, 7-1 in their last eight games when playing the Friars and 6-1 in their last seven games when playing at home against San Diego.

Watch tonight as the Dodgers continue to show why they are the leaders in the AL West and beat up on the San Diego Padres. I recommend a 2-unit play on the Dodgers at -122.

Oliver Perez, New York Mets on runline vs. Chicago Cubs

9/25/2008 6:26:14 AM by ChristopherQuinn

Mets lefty Oliver Perez has cashed the run line in four of his last five starts.  With New York needing a win and the Cubs coasting, make your play on the Mets vs. Chicago.

New York's Oliver Perez has covered the run line in four of his last five starts. Watch tonight as he and the Mets continue to cover the run line at -1½.

Carlos Zambrano is taking the hill this evening for the Cubs. The right hander is a very streaky pitcher as we have seen in his last few games. We all saw his epic no-hitter against the weak Astros, followed directly by 1.2 innings against the Cardinals in which he gave up six hits and eight earned runs with three walks.  Look for the hot bats of David Wright, Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes, who have just eaten apart right handed pitchers this season, to light up the shaky righty tonight and put big numbers on the board for the Mets.

With Oliver Perez (10-7, 4.10) getting the rock tonight for the Mets and having won four of his last five games, look for the southpaw to keep the Cubs score down and give the Cub’s power offense a chance to light up the scoreboard.  The bookies want action on the Mets side of the run line (-1½), so let’s give it to them at a price of +150 or better.

Free Pick: Mets -1½ (+150)

Cliff Lee, Cleveland Indians -104 at Boston Red Sox

9/23/2008 5:26:59 PM by ChristopherQuinn

Cliff Lee is out for win No. 23 tonight, a triumph that will slam the lid on his AL Cy Young competition.  Play the Indians on the road at Fenway vs. the Boston Red Sox.

The smart money tonight is on Cliff Lee and the Cleveland Indians. The Indians are on fire right now, having won seven in a row and only look to get hotter with their ace on the mound.

The AL Cy Young contender will be taking the hill tonight looking to take Game 2 of this four-game series. With the Indians upset win last night, look for Lee to carry that momentum into tonight’s game.  Lee has completely dominated the AL this season compiling 22 wins with only two loses.  Coming off a nine-game winning streak, the southpaw leads the league with a 2.41 ERA, and has a staggering WHIP of 1.09. His strikeout-to-walk ratio is almost unbelievable at 162-31. The numbers that Lee has put up are even more impressive considering that the Indians are barely above .500 this year as a team.

Veteran knuckler Tim Wakefield will be getting the start for the Red Sox tonight, having lost two of his last three outings. The 42-year-old is coming into tonight’s game sporting a mediocre ERA of 4.18, going only 9-11 for the season.

Watch tonight as Lee completely shuts down the Red Sox and slams the lid on his Cy Young contention.  Take the Indians for a two-unit play.

Boston Red Sox -134 to reclaim AL East lead over Rays

9/16/2008 5:42:11 PM by ChristopherQuinn

Boston finally picked up their first win this season at The Trop, pounding six homers in a 13-5 win.  That momentum should carry the Red Sox past the Rays again tonight.

With the scent of first place in the air, the Boston Red Sox look to take the Tampa Bay Rays again tonight in game two of a pivotal three game series in Tampa.

The Red Sox will be giving the ball to 28-year-old Josh Beckett (12-9, 4.10 ERA) this evening. In Beckett’s last outing since Aug. 17, prior to landing on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation, he allowed four hits while striking out seven in five scoreless innings of an 8-1 victory at Texas on Friday. The right-hander is 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA versus Tampa Bay this season, with both wins coming at Fenway. He is 5-3 with a 3.59 ERA lifetime against the Rays. Beckett has always shut down Tampa’s All-Star catcher Dioner Navarro, who has a career batting average of .176 against Beckett.

Tampa Bay counters this evening with Andy Sonnanstine (13-7, 4.66), who failed to hold an early two-run lead and allowed four runs with five hits in six innings of a 6-4 loss to Roy Halladay and Toronto on Friday. The right-hander is meager 1-1 with an 8.85 ERA in four starts versus Boston this season.

The Red Sox will be coming on the field tonight with the best offense in their division. They have averaged over 10 hits per game, and have capitalized on those hits to bring almost 6 runs a game.

Prior to last night the Rays had not lost one to the Red Sox at their home stadium this season. Having snapped the Tropicana curse, look for the Red Sox to carry this momentum into tonight’s game and take game two.

Free Pick: Red Sox -134 (2-unit play)

New York Mets -162 at Nationals 9/15/08

9/15/2008 4:28:28 PM by ChristopherQuinn

Fueled by MVP candidate Carlos Delgado, the Mets have been getting it done on offense, and they will need the bats tonight with Pedro Martinez on the mound at the Nationals.

From the outside, it may look as if the New York Mets are in danger of drowning again, just as they did last season, when they threw away a seven-game lead with 17 games to play and missed the postseason.  But watch tonight as the Mets get back on their winning track and continue their push towards clenching the NL East.

With Pedro Martinez taking the mound this evening for the Mets with an ERA of 5.40 and having only won five of his last 10 starts, and lefty John Lannan, who is 8-13 on the season with an ERA of 4.09, getting the rock for the Nationals, this game is going to be anything but a pitchers duel.

The Mets' power offense is what is going to win this game.  This season against southpaws, the Mets power three (David Wright, Carlos Delgado, and Carlos Beltran) have batted an astounding .309 with an overall record of 32-17. The numbers that these guys have put up this season since Delgado’s return from elbow surgery have been staggering. The Mets are the only team in baseball with three players with 100 or more RBIs. Wright hit for a phenomenal .483 on the homestand against the Braves and has not made an error in his last 34 games and just one in his last 65. Beltran’s 11-game hitting streak ended Sunday, but he has scored 21 runs and knocked in 20 in his last 18 games.

But, the biggest weapon in the Mets arsenal is Carlos Delgado who has introduced himself into the MVP conversation after a dreadful start to his season. On June 27, Delgado had a two-homer, nine-RBI night in Yankee Stadium, and has been prolific ever since, averaging nearly an RBI a game (69 RBIs in 70 games) while hitting 24 home runs and batting .308. Oh yeah, don’t forget about leadoff man Jose Reyes who stole his 50th base this weekend meanwhile batting .299 and hitting 14 dingers on the season.

Watch tonight as the Mets offense carries them into a decisive defeat of the Washington Nationals. Take the Mets on a two-unit play at -162.

Free Pick: Mets -162

Los Angeles Angels -1½ vs. Mariners 9/14/08

9/14/2008 8:28:42 PM by ChristopherQuinn

Bring out your brooms today, as the Los Angeles Angels sweep the Seattle Mariners and cover the run line for the fourth game in a row.

25-year-old Ervin Santana will be taking the mound today for Angels, looking to continue his already stellar season. Santana ranks in the top 10 in the American League in almost every category that a pitcher can qualify for:  wins, strike outs, WHIP, complete games, innings pitched, ERA, and win percentage. Look for Santana to go late into this game and set up Francisco Rodriguez for save number 59.

The Mariners are sending Felix Hernandez to the hill today; who has been mediocre throughout the current season to say the least.  Hernandez is less than .500 this season and is coming off a two-game losing streak. Look for the Angels offense to pounce on this young right hander.

Again today, I am going to let the facts speak for themselves, as they do a much better job than I can: Seattle is 0-5 in their last five games on the road, 1-7 in their last eight against the Angels, and 4-16 in their last 20 games when playing on the road against the Angels.  On the flip side of the coin, the Angels are 6-1 in their last seven games and 5-1 in their last six at home.  Above all of that, the Angels have covered the run line in each of the last three games played against the Mariners.

Call me boring, call me repetitive, but taking the Angels run line at -1½ with a price of +120 is the best bet out there today.

Los Angeles Angels -1 ½ over Seattle Mariners 9/13/08

9/13/2008 7:18:43 AM by ChristopherQuinn

Coming off a 3 game winning streak, the Angels look to continue their dominance in the AL West today as they blow past the Mariners and push towards their first 100 win season.

29 year old Jon Garland will be taking the hill this afternoon for the Angels, setting up the Angel’s third win in the series on their way to a sweep of the Mariners.  He is 13-8 thus far in the season and has an ERA of 4.52. He’s an impressive pitcher at home and is undefeated in his last 3 starts.

Ryan Feierabend will be getting the rock for the Mariners tonight with an away ERA of 11.42. Look for the Angel’s offense to smash on this weak south paw and easily cover the run the line.

Tori Hunter gets the start in centerfield after serving his two game suspension and taking an extra day off last night to let his tweaked quad heal.  Look for Hunter’s red hot bat coupled with the continued strength of Vladimir Guerrero to boost the Angel’s offense and give Frankie Rodriguez a shot at the record books with save #58. We saw Hunter dancing “The Swim” during the Angels division-clinching celebration on Wednesday and he has since joked that it “was part of his therapy.”  If it’s good enough to dance on gentlemen, it’s good enough to bet on.

I’ll just let the facts speak for themselves; Seattle is 4-9 in its last 13 games on the road, 1-5 in their last 6 games when playing the Angels, and 5-15 in their last 20 games when playing on the road against the Angels.  On the flip side of the coin, the Angels are 4-1 in their last 5 games, 6-2 in their last 8 games at home, 5-1 in their last 6 games when playing Seattle, and are a staggering 15-5 in their last 20 games when playing at home against Seattle.  And the icing on the cake, the Angels have beaten the run line the last two nights against the Mariners.

You guys don’t need me to tell you, but here it is. The bookies want action on the Angel’s side of the run line, so let’s give it to them.  Take the -1 ½ run line with a money line of +125 or better for a 2-unit play.

Yankees upset the Rays +112

9/12/2008 7:06:32 AM by ChristopherQuinn

My MLB pick for Friday, September 12, 2008 will be the underdogs, the New York Yankees at home.

After a tough series with the Red Sox, things don’t get any easier for the Ray’s as they head to Yankee Stadium. In 15 meetings with New York this season the Rays are 6-9. The Yankees are on life support in the AL Wild Card race, and they know that they need a sweep against Tampa Bay to even have a chance of making a late playoff push.

According to the calendar Friday’s belong to the Yankee’s with a record of 8-2, while the Rays have continually struggled to put up numbers on Friday’s with a record of 2-8.

Rays manager, Joe Madden, has decided to flip-flop the rotation for tonight’s game, giving Matt Garza the rock against the pin stripes tonight. Garza will be throwing in what would have been James Shields’ spot. Garza has been very mediocre this season on the road with an overall record of 4-6. Garza has lost his last 2 starts, one of which was to the Yankees, and has given up 7 runs in those games.

The pin stripes will be sending Sidney Ponson, a good set up man, to the mound who is 3-1 this season at home with a home ERA of 4.41. The Yankees are going to be relying on their big hitters to step up tonight, and give Rivera a chance to close this game out.

There will be magic in the air tonight as the Yankees begin what could be their final home stand at The House That Ruth Built.

I recommend a 1-unit play on the Yanks at +122.

Chicago Cubs -133 at St. Louis

9/11/2008 6:12:02 PM by ChristopherQuinn

Today the Cubs are going to remind everyone why they are the division leaders, just like they did last night. My Thursday MLB selection is the Chicago Cubs over the St. Lois Cardinals, played tonight in St. Louis.

The 26 year old Rich Harden, a recent addition to the Cubs arsenal, will be taking the mound today with an astonishing 1.50 ERA since joining the cubs back in July. He’s 4-1 with the cubs and 9-2 for the season. He will be coming off a two rotation rest, so his arm will be prime for today’s start.

The cubs are 15-4 in their last 19 games on the road and are 16-8 in their last 24 games against the Cardinals.

Despite the Cub’s recent losing streak, they are finally back to a full line up. Shortstop Ryan Theriot, who’s batting .308, will be getting the start after being taken out in the 6th inning in Cincinnati for dizziness and dehydration.  The pitching staff was also really hurt with reliever Chad Gaudin’s back injury, but with the team doctor saying that “there was nothing serious wrong” on Monday, he will be back in the lineup, filling the void that the Cubs had in their middle.  All Star outfielder, Kosuke Fukudome will also be back in the starting lineup for today’s game. As last night’s game showed, the Cub’s with a full and healthy active roster are tough to beat.

Todd Wellemeyer will be getting the start for the Cardinals today having lost 2 of his last 3 starts.

Take the cubs
